UC Davis Students Doused with Pepper Spray

Last Friday, a group of UC Davis students planned a small Occupy demonstration on their campus. They sat down across a walkway in the middle of campus and linked arms. Soon after, police showed up at the scene and after protesters passively refused to move, a riot-gear clad officer shot pepper spray into the students’ faces.

This video has gone viral, enraging students across the country and prompting UC President Mark G. Yudof to place the police chief and two officers on administrative leave.

Free speech is part of the DNA of this university, and non-violent protest has long been central to our history,”  Yudof said in response to Friday’s incident. “It is a value we must protect with vigilance.”
