Stephen Chastain, 24, a senior at Salem State University in Salem, Mass. has been charged with attempted murder of a professor who was stabbed on campus Wednesday afternoon, Boston.com reports.
Chastain was caught just a block away from the scene, though authorities are unsure of his link to the faculty member, who CBS Boston reports was Pierre Walker, a professor in the English department at Salem State.
“It seemed to be very random,” university spokeswoman Karen Murray Cady told Boston.com.
The professor sustained a wound to his neck, but is expected to recover from his injuries. The student is being charged with attempted murder, assault and battery, and strangulation or suffocation, CBS Boston reports.
Classes were held Thursday. However, one student told CBS Boston that he questions how long it took school officials to alert students of the dangerous incident Wednesday night.
“I know the suspect was apprehended, I’d like to know a violent crime happened very close to us while in class,” sophomore Stephen Jack told the station.
