The Actor Who Played Hagrid Died & ‘Harry Potter’ Fans Are Heartbroken

On Oct. 14, Robbie Coltrane, Hagrid in Harry Potter, passed away — and we are heartbroken. Coltrane meant so much to Gen Z who grew up on the wizarding films. The half-giant and half-human won hearts on screen and off with his tough exterior and warm, welcoming personality. A true gentle giant who brought magic to every child he touched.

His old castmate, Daniel Radcliff, Harry in Harry Potter, released a statement on his passing. The duo worked together on eight movies over the course of a decade.

“Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set,” Radcliffe’s statement reads. “I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on ‘Prisoner of Azkaban,’ when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

News of the beloved actor’s death has caused a stir on social media today with many fans posting tributes to his life’s work. Wands up, Gen Z.

Raise your wands tonight for Hagrid and Coltrane, the best gamekeeps of our lifetime.
