Reneé Rapp & Meg Thee Stallion’s “Not My Fault” Music Video Is Filled With ‘Mean Girls’ Easter Eggs

On Jan. 5, Reneé Rapp and Megan Thee Stallion released the music video for “Not My Fault,” the hot new hit from the Mean Girls musical movie, which will hit theaters on Jan. 12. Needless to say, it did not disappoint. Reneé Rapp is the perfect Regina George — and has been proving it for years with her Broadway experience and overall baddie attitude — but the “Not My Fault” music video has sealed the deal! This Mean Girls track by Rapp and Megan Thee Stallion is a must-listen, thanks to its confidence-boosting lyrics and fun beat. The “Not My Fault” music video is jam-packed with scenes from the new movie, Easter eggs that give a nod to the original 2004 film, and a completely show-stopping performance from Rapp and Megan Thee Stallion.

The music video starts off with Rapp and Meg in stunning pink feather outfits that are so Mean Girls-coded. Not to mention they are surrounded by Regina mannequins sporting Rachel McAdams’ iconic “A Little Bit Dramatic” outfit from the original film. Before viewers can even fully take in this Easter egg, the music video teases a few scenes from the film. One dance scene specifically stands out, with Karen dancing at the Halloween party in her “I’m a mouse, duh” costume that all Mean Girls fans love. Another scene sneak peek shows Chris Brinely as Aaron Samuels with his beautiful pushed-back hair.

When viewers get into the first verse, Rapp and Meg have traded in their feathers for the light pink fluffy hats, which they teased in Rapp’s Instagram post when the single first came out. The two take the start of this verse to pose in the mirror facing each other, showing that both of these women are so Regina George-coded. The camera quickly flashes to Damien in his recognizable blue hoodie, Tina Fey trust-falling off the stage, and a Cady Heron zoom-in. For the second round of the chorus, viewers are graced with a jaw-dropping dance sequence that I already have to learn.

Of course, Rapp has to be doing something iconic for her next line, “Kiss a blonde (Kiss a blonde), kiss a friend (OK). Can a gay girl get an Amen? ‘Amen!’” She’s getting a tattoo! The close ups of “Regina George” on her skin show that she’s not only emulating the Regina George we know and love, but also reinventing her. After a few party and dance scenes from the movie are shown (I need to know more about that kiss, BTW), Rapp and Megan give into their female rage. This is a reference to the original Mean Girls movie, where high school is constantly referred to as the “animal world.” They take this time to absolutely destroy the mannequins from the opening scene with hot pink bats.

When Megan Thee Stallion comes on the song with, “I mean, who wouldn’t wanna be in love with me? (Love with me). I’m a mood, borin’ wh*res gotta Pinterest me,” she’s wearing one of Regina George’s most iconic looks of all time: the white tank top with holes showing off her purple bra. Megan is going full Regina, showing that she is a trendsetter. Viewers also get a few more clips from the prom and talent show scenes that were shown in the trailer.

Overall, this is one of the most iconic music videos I have ever seen. The attention to detail was incredible, and gave viewers a good glimpse at what we can expect from the new Mean Girls movie. The scenes from the movie shown gave insight to the musical aspect of the movie, too, and I honestly could not be more excited!
