In a series of tweets last night, Rebel Wilson shared that while she was at a club the night before she realized her drink “may have been spiked with something.” While she was able to leave safely and return home, she woke up “feeling like [she’d] been hit by a truck.”
Using her celebrity platform, Wilson took the unfortunate, frightening incident as a means of providing a caution to fellow club and bar goers. Sound like rape culture? That’s because it is. While Wilson certainly made these comments from a place of good intentions, it’s curious that she didn’t also add that people just shouldn’t spike drinks in the first place.
Although she would do well to correct the statements she made on Twitter, or at least add to them, we can probably rest assured Wilson is firmly on the side of those persons targeted by rape, not those contributing to rape culture. Wilson is an advocate for body positivity and self-love, but this wasn’t her first time erring on the wrong side of political correctness.
While presenting an award at the BAFTAs in February, Wilson made a highly questionable joke about trans people. While questions of political correctness and its place in comedy are another discussion entirely, it seems Wilson might need a refresher on issues faced by female, trans and gender nonconforming people.
