In The “My Birkin” TikTok Trend, Creators Compare & Contrast

Do you ever go to Chipotle for takeout and get back home, just to open up that brown paper bag with excitement and realize with horror that they forgot to give you a plastic fork? Sure, you can use a fork you have at home, but the Chipotle forks just hit different, and now your burrito bowl with extra guac won’t taste nearly as good — but why? What makes the highly-coveted Chipotle fork different from just a normal fork?

Steadily growing in popularity is the “My Birkin” TikTok trend, where creators compare two things that are actually more similar than originally thought. While the video where the trend originates was originally posted back in March, users are now posting under the viral sound to share their favorite comparisons — including the unspoken difference between a Chipotle fork and a normal fork, of course.

Here’s where the trend comes from, how creators are using it, and how to try the trend out yourself.

Where does the trending sound originate?

The “My Birkin” TikTok trend directly comes from a video uploaded on March 19 by fashion and beauty content creator Charles Gross. In the video, Charles explains the difference between his two Birkin bags, starting the video by showing his two Birkin bags and saying, “My Birkin. Another Birkin. But what makes these two Birkins different, and what small feature about them divides the Hermes collector community?” Charles continues the video by explaining the small differences between the two.

While the video was originally an advertisement for @fashionphile, a luxury reselling platform, the video recently erupted in popularity as users found humor in Charles’ soothing voice and detailed comparisons.

In the “My Birkin” TikTok trend, creators share their preferences.

The “My Birkin” TikTok trend may be niche, but that is part of what makes it so funny, relatable, and on-brand with other viral TikTok trends. For instance, user @ilovehiccups used the popular trend to compare two different types of the same brand of cream cheese, while creator @yolknatalia compared her two pairs of black Converse (they look the same to me in the video — what am I missing?!).

Creator @diamondivities even went as far as to compare Diet Coke in a can versus Diet Coke in a plastic bottle. Okay, but once again, what is the difference here?! (Also, if you like Diet Coke, we need to talk.)

Trying the “My Birkin” TikTok trend is simple.

To try the “My Birkin” TikTok trend out yourself, start out by scrolling through the viral sound to get some inspiration from other creators. Then, think about two things in your life that are different from each other, but are actually more similar than you would have originally thought — for instance, your two pets, or your two favorite skin cleansers. And you know the rest — press record and get to filming.
