Meghan Trainor Just Dropped a New Single & I Never Realized How Much I Needed Her In My Life Until Right Now

Meghan Trainor has been a household name ever since the release of her 2014 hit “All About That Bass,” and it looks like she plans on it keeping that way.

Trainor’s new single, “No Excuses,” just dropped today, and it already looks poised to be mega-popular.

Like all of Trainor’s songs, it’s ridiculously catchy (it’ll be stuck in my head for days!) and the music video is all kinds of colorful fun (watch it below). This is the first song we’re hearing from her new album, so it seems like a good omen for other songs to come. However, Trainor did tell PEOPLE that “No Excuses” is “one of the only songs [on this album] that is my sassy, ‘Meghan Trainor’ self that I think everyone will recognize on the radio,” so I guess we’ll have to wait and see what she has in store.

And even though the song is less than three minutes long, Trainor is by no means lacking in substance: the song has vintage vibes, an empowering message, and even a possible cameo from her fiancé Daryl Sabara. All of this comes together to show that even though this is the first new song she’s released since she had a second vocal surgery last year, she’s not letting anything hold her back.

Trainor revealed that she drew inspiration from the recent conversations surrounding the entertainment industry in light of the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements. “I love how so many women are standing up for what’s right. I wanted to write us all a powerful anthem,” she explained. “Sometimes, people talk down to me, because I’ve only been doing this for four years, so I wrote this song. It’s my modern version of ‘R-E-S-P-E-C-T.’  It’s all about equality and being kind.”

Considering the song’s lyrics, “I don’t disrespect you, don’t you disrespect me” and “There ain’t no excuses, excuses, babe / Your mama raised you better than that,” I’d say she’s definitely accomplished that goal.

Trainor’s new album comes out later this year, and if “No Excuses” is any indication, it’s going to be a good one.
