Lucy Dacus & Julien Baker’s Friendship Timeline Is Totally Warming My Heart

I, for one, am a firm believer in celebrating with yourself, SO, and of course, your friends. One of my favorite groups who never fail to show love to each other every day is none other than the alternative rock group Boygenius

Boygenius, comprised of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, is more than just a music group creating sad songs you can cry to in your bed at night. They are the best of friends, advocates, and gold medalists for confusing their fans on whether or not they are dating. BTW, they aren’t. Despite their massive amount of PDA, Boygenius isn’t a throuple, they’re just unapologetically queer. It’s just another thing that makes the boys the boys and I love them for it.

While all three members of the band are close, two members have quite a special friendship. Yes, I’m talking about Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. Dacus and Baker are two-peas-in-a-pod, ultimate friendship goals, and creative geniuses. They are always showing their love for each other in their own way, whether that’s through a duo Halloween costume or kissing each other on stage, Dacus and Baker have a friendship I adore.

Here’s everything we know about their friendship, from 2016 to now.

2016: Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker meet.

Boygenius started with Dacus and Baker, and the story of how these two met and instantly hit it off warms my heart. Before any of her music came out, Dacus opened up for Baker in 2016 in Washington, DC. Following the performance, Baker went backstage to find Dacus reading Henry James’ The Portrait of a Lady. They started talking and realized how much they had in common. Before leaving, Dacus tore out a blank page of her book and gave Baker her email address.

Their friendship continued to grow throughout the years. Baker would often tell Dacus about Bridgers, who would later join Boygenius. In 2016, Bridgers opened up for Baker on some of her tour — the same one Dacus opened up for her on, just at different times. A big invisible string here!

2018: Lucy Dacus meets Phoebe Bridgers.

Dacus and Baker’s friendship continued to grow, and in 2018, Dacus finally met Bridgers. Before they had even created any music, the trio booked a tour. Clearly, they knew a trio band was meant to be.

Dacus writes a song about Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers for “The Record.”

After meeting in 2016, Dacus and Baker’s friendship continued to flourish, with Bridgers by their side now. On Boygenius’ 2023 album The Record, Dacus revealed that she wrote the song “We’re in Love” for Baker and Bridgers.

The song is beautiful, clearly showing how much the friendship among the trio means to Dacus.

October 2023: Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker dress up as Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande for Halloween.

In 2023, Dacus and Baker won for best duo Halloween costume. Dacus and Barker dressed up as Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande, respectively, as the recreated that picture. It was iconic.

October 31, 2023: Lucy Dacus sings Julien Baker’s song “Good News” at a show.

Dacus really showed her love for Baker during a Boygenius show at the Hollywood Bowl on Halloween in 2023 by singing her song “Good News” to her. It was beautiful.

These two are ultimate friendship goals, and are your reminder to show yourself and your friends love every chance you get!
