Lose the Freshman 15: On track

It’s official: Spring break is over. Sigh.

Goodbye junk food and laziness. Hello fruits, vegetables and work.

When I think about spring break these are the things I will remember: friends, food and fun. But although this is a vacation I will never forget, I’m ready to get back on my healthy eating and exercise routine. When I returned to Gainesville it felt like I had never left.

I’m ready to go on my usual Monday run through campus. I’m ready to eat my traditional turkey sandwich and apple for lunch. I’m ready to fix myself a homemade, healthy dinner and sit on the couch and watch The Bachelor finale with a group of my close friends.

It’s time to get back on track, and I’m excited. Just because I’ve returned from my cruise doesn’t mean I don’t want to look good in a bikini. I want to feel just as good about myself at the end of the semester. Here are some things I tell myself to stay on track.

1. Exercise six days a week

I make it part of my schedule and give myself one day off. It motivates me to go every day during the week so I can take a day on the weekend off to be lazy.

2. Cook as often as you can

I find that when I cook, the food I eat is healthier. I like knowing exactly what I’m eating. You never really know what extra sauce or oil is added when you eat out.

3. Give into cravings sometimes

If you’re craving a piece of chocolate, then eat a piece of chocolate. It won’t kill you, and you will feel satisfied. This doesn’t mean eat a king size Snickers, but a little will keep you satisfied and on track to your desired weight.

What are some tips that keep you on track?

I am a junior journalism student at the University of Florida. I am very passionate about health and fitness and hope to be a health writer or editor one day. Currently, I intern for Giggle, which is a family and parenting magazine that serves the Gainesville community. Outside of journalism I enjoy running, playing and coaching soccer, and socializing with my friends.
