Lose the Freshman 15: Taking time to relax

I was not prepared for my 7:45 a.m. class this morning.

In fact, my alarm went off at 6:45 a.m., and I didn’t even hear it until my second alarm woke me up at 7 a.m. So I shot out of bed, packed my Special K cereal in a Ziploc bag and ran out the door.

It was a long first day back, but I got through it. However, I had a lot to do before I could sit on my couch and watch The Bachelor finale with my friends. Class, meetings, soccer coaching and the gym were on my list of things to do before I could indulge in my guilty pleasure.

And SELF’s tip of the day motivated me to get my work done. According to SELF, this downtime with friends is important. Unwinding and laughing with friends causes a response similar to exercise.

I think this is something I need to work on. I’m always on the go or working. Watching the finale with my friends tonight took my mind off all the work I have to do. It was a good two-hour, entertaining escape from reality. (OK maybe it was three. I had to watch the after show.)

From now on, I’m going to try to give myself some downtime every day. I may not have time for a three-hour break, but maybe I can take a 30-minute break to catch up on my favorite sitcom, read a pleasure book or watch a funny YouTube video.

What do you do to unwind? I would love to hear!

I am a junior journalism student at the University of Florida. I am very passionate about health and fitness and hope to be a health writer or editor one day. Currently, I intern for Giggle, which is a family and parenting magazine that serves the Gainesville community. Outside of journalism I enjoy running, playing and coaching soccer, and socializing with my friends.
