Lose the Freshman 15: Hummus addiction; good or bad?

I have a confession to make.

I am addicted to hummus.

My addiction started on my vacation to Israel in 2006. Before I went to Israel I had never tried the chickpea dip, but because it was served with every meal I grew to not just like it, but I loved it. So when I returned from Israel after a great summer, my parents started buying hummus. And when I left for college, hummus became a regular on my weekly grocery list

I’ve always heard that hummus is good for you, but I never knew why. I started questioning if I needed to break my hummus addiction.

Hummus is usually a part of my everyday snack. I eat it with vegetables, such as carrots, or reduced-fat Wheat Thins. Obviously, the vegetables are the healthier option, but sometimes I’m just craving hummus with Wheat Thins.

And according to WebMD, a hummus addiction isn’t such a bad thing. Of course, too much of anything isn’t good for you, but hummus has many health benefits. Chickpeas contain a lot of protein and fiber, which is the main hummus ingredient. It is also rich in many vitamins and minerals, such as folic acid, zinc and magnesium. Beans may also help lower cholesterol and prevent cancer. Hummus is high in monosaturated fat, the good fat, and has decent amounts of calcium and iron.

One of the reasons why hummus is one of my favorite snacks is because it fills me up and keeps me satisfied until my next meal. And it’s no wonder why. This snack is packed with nutrients, not just empty calories.

Next time you go to the grocery store, consider trying this nutrient-rich snack. But be warned. You may become very addicted.
