Since the beginning of this semester, I have had a scheduled exercise routine. Sunday is long-run day.
I sleep in until about 10 a.m., wake up, make breakfast, relax and digest before a long run around Gainesville. This usually means I run about 12:30 p.m.
However, the past couple weeks this long run has been very difficult. At 12:30 p.m. it is no longer 60 degrees with no humidity. It is now about 90 degrees and humid. This temperature change definitely affects my run. As my feet pound the pavement, I breathe heavier, do not run as quickly and do not have the motivation to complete a nine-or 10-mile run.
Running at this time is physically and mentally harder. And I know as summer approaches it is only going to get worse.
It’s time for a change in routine.
I do not like change. I get into a routine, and I stick to it. But I know if I want to continue to improve my running and fitness level, this change is necessary.
I have a decision to make. I can either sacrifice sleeping in and run before 11 a.m., or I can wait until after 5 p.m. to hit the pavement.
Personally, I like exercising first thing in the morning. I think it is refreshing, and it clears my mind and helps me focus. I know this means I will have to sacrifice lazy Sunday mornings, but overall I will be happier with my run. It won’t be as hot out, and I will have the motivation to push myself through the last few miles.
But everyone is different. Some like to end the day with exercise. It’s about finding out what works with your schedule. But I do not recommend running in the heat of the day, especially as summer approaches. You will get more out of your run if temperatures are more favorable. And be sure to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated.
What is your favorite time of day to go on a run?
