Lose the Freshman 15: Game time munchies

The Florida basketball game was on and all I could think about was how much I had the munchies.

Thankfully, my magazine group project game to the rescue. In one of my classes we have to create a magazine, and one of the articles is about healthy tailgating recipes.

So at 1 p.m., my doorbell rang, and my group project members came into my apartment carrying tasty ingredients for our healthy tailgate.

At first I was skeptical. How could tailgating be healthy and taste good at the same time? It seems like nothing is healthy about wings, chips and artery-clogging dip.

But to my surprise everything was delicious. We had a bean dip, fruit skewers, baked wings, pizza, cookies and sweet potato skins.

You must be thinking, “Pizza? Wings? Cookies? How are those things healthy?”

OK, this tailgate isn’t as healthy as eating broccoli, but if you use the right ingredients, you will leave feeling satisfied and confident that you didn’t over indulge.

For example, we made the pizza sauce with half tomato sauce half pumpkin. Even I thought it was a strange mixture at first, but it tasted delicious. The pumpkin really just made the sauce sweeter.

And I’m all about going big or going home when it comes to dessert, but our cookies, which were made with whole-wheat flour, oatmeal, apple sauce (as a substitute for oil) and dark chocolate chips, completely satisfied my sweet tooth.

I was able to get my game time munchies fix while eating healthier food.  And the day ended even better because the Gators won. I might need to have tailgate round two for the next round of the tournament.

What are some of your tailgate favorites?
