Lose the Freshman 15: Finding time to exercise on a busy day

There seems to be a theme among college students: Very few people want to have class on Friday.

I know I’m one of those students. I avoid Friday classes at all costs. A three-day weekend every week sounds fantastic.

But the downside to taking Friday off is it usually means you have at least one really busy day. And for me that is on Thursday. My day starts at 10:40 a.m. and doesn’t end until 7 p.m.

Sometimes it is hard to find time to get in a workout. I know I could wake up early and workout, but then I sacrifice valuable sleep. And by the time 7 p.m. rolls around, I just want to go home, eat dinner and relax.

But getting a sweat on days like this isn’t impossible. I have one long break between classes, and I go on a run through campus.

I motivate myself by putting on my running shoes and attire when I wake up in the morning. This way, I’m ready to go, and I have no excuse to forgo a run.

And because I am on a time-crunched schedule, I need to push myself to finish my run with enough time to get to my next class. I’ve had some of my personal best times on a Thursday afternoon run.

One of the best parts about my afternoon run is it gives me energy that keeps me focused in my final three-hour class. I come home at night, cook dinner, feel great and have no regrets for squeezing a run into my schedule. And the first step is putting your running clothes on in the morning.

How do you motivate yourself to exercise on a busy day?

I am a junior journalism student at the University of Florida. I am very passionate about health and fitness and hope to be a health writer or editor one day. Currently, I intern for Giggle, which is a family and parenting magazine that serves the Gainesville community. Outside of journalism I enjoy running, playing and coaching soccer, and socializing with my friends.
