I have never been a neat freak, and I never will be a neat freak.
But as I read SELF’s tip of the day, which recommends clearing clutter to help you focus on your fitness goals, I looked around my room and saw my suitcase from spring break still overflowing. I still hadn’t unpacked, and my room looked like it threw up with clothes.
I know it’s unacceptable. I have been back in Gainesville for almost a week and was still living out of a suitcase. Yes, the clutter was bothering me, but I just avoided my room as much as possible. However, I knew I couldn’t avoid my room forever.
SELF’s tip motivated me to unpack and clean up. I folded my clothes and neatly put them in my drawers. Then I made my bed, cleaned my bathroom and vacuumed my floor. And when I finished, it felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders.
Now, I can relax in my room and focus on more important things, such as exercising and eating healthy. Tidying up changed my attitude. I found myself more motivated to get my work done, to cook dinner and to exercise.
My goal is to keep it up. If I keep it clean I will be more focused, which will help me in school and contribute to my positive attitude when it comes to exercising.
SELF recommends spending 20 minutes a day tidying up. This will be very difficult for me, but I’m going to try it. I’m going to make cleaning up part of my everyday routine before I go to bed. It will be nice waking up without clutter on the floor.
If you have any suggestions that motivate you to clean, let me know. I would love to hear how you keep it clean.
