Lose the Freshman 15: Being creative with a yeast-free diet

For the next week, I’m observing the Jewish holiday, Passover.

This means I can’t eat anything with yeast in it. In a way it’s like a low-carb diet. I can’t eat bread, so instead I eat matzo, which is basically a giant cracker.

However, I ran into a problem while making my lunch today. Every day I eat a turkey sandwich on multigrain bread, but for the next week my go-to lunch will have to take a break.

Today I had to get creative. However, I didn’t want my turkey to go to waste, so I knew I wanted to incorporate it into my meal. I started thinking about my favorite foods, and of course, hummus came to mind.

I had a brilliant idea. I would combine my two favorite foods, turkey and hummus, and make a lunch I had never tried before. I made four turkey roll-ups and dipped them into my hummus.

First, it felt great to get out of my turkey sandwich comfort zone and try something new. Second, I really enjoyed it, and I would eat it even if it weren’t Passover.

Sometimes it’s important to change up your meals. I didn’t even realize I was getting bored with my turkey sandwiches. It was just a habit to make one every day. I paired my turkey roll-ups with an apple and couldn’t have felt more satisfied. This high-protein meal gave me the energy I needed to continue studying for my multiple finals and held me over until dinner.

This week I’m going to try and mix up my meals. Hopefully I will have some more delicious yeast-free meals to share.
