HC Wake-Up Call: TV Host Fights Back After Receiving Insulting Email From the Ansari Piece’s Writer, Senate Republicans Abandon DACA Deal & SoulCycle Has Post-Workout Cookie

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

HLN Host Claps Back After Writer of Ansari Piece Sends Her Insulting Email

After saying that Aziz Ansari’s accuser was compromising the #MeToo movement earlier this week, HLN host Ashleigh Banfield publicly shared a controversial email that the writer of the anonymous woman’s account sent her team. BuzzFeed News reports that Banfield read a portion of writer Katie Way’s email, which was in response to a producer’s invitation for her to appear on the show, aloud on air on Tuesday. “I hope the 500 retweets on the single news write-up made that burgundy lipstick, bad highlights, second-wave feminist has-been really relevant for a little while,” Way wrote in reference to Banfield.

Banfield fiercely responded to the message on her show Crime & Justice with Ashleigh Banfield, saying, “The reason I want to share that is because if you truly believe in the #MeToo movement, if you truly believe in women’s rights, if you truly believe in feminism, the last thing you should do is attack someone in an ad hominem way for her age.”

The reporter continued, “That is not the way we have this conversations, as women or men — as journalists. We do not attack people for their age or their highlights or their lipstick because it is the most hypocritical thing a woman who says she supports the women’s movement could ever do, and that’s the caliber of the woman who was given all of this power and was able to wield this power.”

Republicans Give Up on the Bipartisan DACA Deal

BuzzFeed News reports that while Senate Republicans have abandoned a bipartisan deal regarding DACA, Democrats are threatening to begin a government shutdown if a deal to revive the program isn’t included in a proposed bill. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters, “I’m looking for something that President Trump supports and he’s not yet indicated what measure he’s willing to sign. As soon as we figure out what he is for then I would be convinced that we were not just spinning our wheels going to this issue on the floor.”

What with Republicans saying that there is little chance of a new deal forming by the end of the week, there is a chance that Congress will not meet Friday’s midnight deadline to avoid a government shutdown. The news of Senate Republicans dismissing the DACA deal comes on the same day that it was going to be formally introduced.
