The Reason Behind Kylie Jenner’s Lip Injections Is So Sad

Flashback to not so long ago when the news broke about Kylie Jenner’s lip injections. The world just about lost it. (Side note, what does it say about society when most of the population wants to tear a teenager down for her looks??) Flash forward to now, and Jenner’s explanation for why she started using lip fillers has us feeling like we can definitely relate.

In an interview for the October/November 2016 issue of Complex Magazine, Jenner says that her insecurity about her lips stems from when she was in middle school.

She told Complex, “This guy I kissed was like, ‘Your lips are really small but you’re a really good kisser. I didn’t think you were gonna be good at kissing. It was so rude. From then on, I just felt like I saw guys staring at my lips. I felt like no one wanted to kiss me.”

For someone like Jenner, who has been in the spotlight for a huge amount of her life, it’s almost surprising to hear how affecting comments like that can be—and it’s refreshing to see how honest she can reflect on it now.

The lip kit guru also told Complex that she initially denied the lip injection rumors because of the responsibility she felt she carried, based on her place in the spotlight. “I didn’t want to be a bad influence. I didn’t want people to think you had to get your lips done to feel good about yourself,” she admitted. “But they thought it was crazier that I was lying about it because it was so obvious. I wish I had just been honest and upfront.”

Sometimes it can feel like the Kardashian-Jenner clan is so far removed from any sort of normal life—but it would do us all good to remember that words can hurt, famous or not.
