If there’s one thing celebrities want everyone to respect, it’s their privacy. That’s why 36-year-old Ryan Collins from Lancaster, Pennsylvania is being put behind bars.
Collins was sentenced to a year and half in prison after being found responsible for the 2014 celebrity nude hack that ended up flooding the Internet with nude photos and videos of some of Hollywood’s most famous women, reports the Associated Press.
In May, Collins revealed that he ran a two-year phishing scam that allowed him to obtain the passwords of over 100 celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence and Rihanna. He was able to score their personal information by sending fake emails that appeared to be from Google or Apple. The FBI also reported that he was able to download the complete contents of over 50 iCloud accounts using a software program.
While Collins is most certainly responsible for hacking the computers of Hollywood stars, he wasn’t the one who released them.
On Thursday, the U.S. Attorney said that they had no evidence that showed that Collins caused the images to go viral “or that Collins shared or uploaded the information he obtained.”
Despite their time in the limelight, we can all agree that celebrities have a right to privacy, just like the rest of us—so we’re glad that Collins is being held responsible.
