Can Selena Gomez’s Career Survive Spring Breakers?

Mark your calendars, because if there’s one thing you want to do during spring break, it’s catch Spring Breakers when it hits theaters on Friday, March 15. The film is outrageous: A gaggle of bikini-clad, former Disney stars rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break trip, then get bailed out of jail by a rapper named Alien (James Franco).

If the idea of squeaky-clean good girls Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Benson as grungy, sexed-up criminals shocks you, that’s exactly what they’re going for. Gomez and Hudgens told the New York Times about their transition to more adult roles.

“It was an amazing opportunity for us,” said Hudgens. “Selena and I are both young, finding our footing, wanting to grow.”

In one scene, Hudgens’ character holds a loaded gun while Franco’s character simulates fellatio on it. We definitely didn’t see anything like that in High School Musical

“It’s as far as I could go at this point in my life and career,” said Gomez. “It’s me kind of taking baby steps. But I know that people will judge my involvement in the movie as a whole. I’m prepared to accept that.”

Later in the interview, Gomez refutes the idea that her role in Spring Breakers would alienate her younger fans. “I think [those critics are] not giving my fans enough credit,” she defends.
