Ariana Grande Donates $250,000 to Planned Parenthood Amid Anti-Abortion Legislation

Ariana Grande is taking a stand against the recent anti-abortion bills that have been passed.

The pop star has donated $250,000 from her recent concert in Atlanta to Planned Parenthood amid Georgia’s controversial anti-abortion bill, the organization confirmed Wednesday.

In recent months, nine states, including Georgia, have passed legislation restricting abortions in what some are claiming is an attempt to get the conservative majority of the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized the procedure nationwide. In early May, Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed the “heartbeat bill,” which prohibits abortions after cardiac activity in an embryo can be detected. Georgia’s abortion ban is set to take effect on January 1.

“Ariana Grande’s generous donation comes at a critical time — in Georgia and across the country, anti-women’s health politicians are trying to ban all safe, legal abortion,” Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Dr. Leana Wen said in a statement to E! News. “This is not what the American people want, nor is it something they’ll stand for. Thanks to inspiring support like hers, Planned Parenthood can continue to fight back — in the courts, in Congress, in state houses, and in the streets — against these dangerous attacks on people’s health and lives.”

“We are so grateful to Ariana for her longstanding commitment to supporting women’s rights and standing with Planned Parenthood to defend access to reproductive health care,” Wen added. “We won’t stop fighting — no matter what.”

Several other celebrities have also voiced their opposition to Georgia’s abortion ban. The state is a popular Hollywood filming location because of its generous tax breaks. According to HuffPost, Netflix has also vowed to fight the law in court alongside the American Civil Liberties Union, and, if necessary, will reconsider its investment in the state.
