On Monday, a Trump transition team representative told CNN that Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law (husband of his oldest daughter, Ivanka) will serve as his senior adviser when he ascends to the Presidency.
If that sounds really sus to you, that’s because it is. Conflicts of interest aside, before helping to run Trump’s presidential campaign, Kushner had ZERO prior political experience (ring any bells?). He went to Harvard University, not likely on his own merit, and is a real estate developer who’s also involved in online media.
After the news of Kushner’s position broke, Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee, which oversees the House of Representatives, demanded a review of the nomination “in light of the anti-nepotism statute.”
Supporters of the appointment aren’t worried about their chances, though, according to The New York Times. “I am not saying there’s no legal argument on the other side…I’m just saying we have the better argument and will prevail,” Kushner’s lawyer, Jamie Gorelick, told the Times about of the situation.
Kushner has also long defended Trump’s controversial statements and strategies. “It’s that simple, really…Donald Trump is not anti-Semitic and he’s not a racist,” Kushner wrote in his own magazine, according to Cosmopolitan. In a New York Magazine profile on Kushner, it was stated that he “is more like his father-in-law than anyone imagines.” RED FLAG.
Kushner will apparently leave behind his private sector ties once Trump’s administration begins. “Kushner also will not take a salary as he steps into the West Wing job,” according to CNN. How big of him!
This, of course, is not the first disconcerting choice by Donald Trump for his Presidential administration. We can only hope that the checks and balances system of the United States government does its job and that civilians and activists keep fighting for justice.
