Balancing a Busy Weekend and Eating Healthy

Hey Collegiettes™!

Have you ever had one of those weekends where you are so busy that you don’t have time to catch up on sleep from the week? That was my past weekend. I was up late Friday and Saturday and didn’t get more than six hours of sleep each night. My weekend consisted of a 5k run for Autism, Relay for Life, Initiation, I Hop, and The Madison Project ( an a capella group at JMU, check out their music here).

I must say I wasn’t expecting to get a good workout in this weekend. I figured I would walk the 5k and sit around more than walk at Relay. However, when I arrived at the 5k with the rest of my group I learned that they were all going to try running it, so I decided to test myself and run the 5k. I was not prepared to run 3.1 miles, but I ended up running most of the course. I was proud of myself. I’m not a runner by any means, but I have learned over the years that running is just as much mental as it is physical. If you have the mentality, you too can run a 5k!

Every year my fraternity does Relay for Life and I always have a blast. I get to hang out with friends, eat junk food, walk for a great cause, listen to local bands perform, and eat some more junk food. This year I spend more time walking and talking then eating, which was great! While being on the SELF Jump Start diet I have learned to gain control of my eating habits. Even when tempted by Oreos and chips I choose the healthiest option that I know won’t completely ruin my diet.

By the time Sunday came, I was exhausted, but it was my fraternity’s initiation. I am a part of a music fraternity, Sigma Alpha Iota and now we have 10 new members. After every ceremony my fraternity has, it has become a tradition of ours to go to I Hop. Last time I went to I Hop I was not on the Jump Start diet, but this time I was and noticed that they had a lot of “Simple & Fit” options for under 600 calories. I got the Simple & Fit Simply Chicken Sandwich for 470 calories and it was just as satisfying as I bet the Philly Cheese Steak Stacker I was craving would have been.

Like SELF & Her Campus bloggers, Nikki, Ally, and Sarah have talked about before; it is possible to keep on track with a diet while living the life of a busy college student. It does take more willpower, but you will love yourself afterwards for choosing the healthy option!

Elizabeth is a senior writing and rhetoric major at James Madison University with a minor in communication studies. She is involved in many activities on campus including a job with University Unions, where she writes articles for the website and contributes to the blog. Elizabeth hopes to get a job after graduation that will involve lots of writing, whether that be at a publication or doing PR. But for now she is enjoying the little time she has left at JMU.
