‘Barbie’ Fans Are Upset At America Ferrera’s Golden Globes Snub

The nominations for the 2024 Golden Globe awards were released on Dec. 11, 2023. The movie with the most nominations this year was, unsurprisingly, Barbie, the live-action Barbie doll movie that was released in July 2023. However, some fans of the film were upset that America Ferrera, one of the leading characters in the movie, did not receive a nomination.

Barbie received nine Golden Globe nominations, including Best Picture, Comedy or Musical and Best Actress for Margot Robbie, who played the leading character of Barbie. Ryan Gosling, who played Ken, was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Fans had expected America Ferrera, who played Gloria in the film, to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress, but she was not.

In the movie, Gloria works at Mattel and accidentally brings an old Barbie doll into the real world. Gloria’s iconic monologue in Barbie was widely discussed after the film was released. The monologue about what it’s like to be a woman constantly facing double standards hit home with many women viewers.

“It is literally impossible to be a woman,” Gloria tells Barbie in the movie. “You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don’t think you’re good enough.” Ferrera told Vanity Fair that the monologue was one of the first things director Greta Gerwig shared with her. Gerwig told Ferrera, “I wrote this monologue for Gloria, and I’ve always imagined you saying this.”

Needless to say, Ferrera’s delivery of this speech was one of the most talked-about scenes from Barbie, so fans were dismayed to learn that Ferrera had not earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance.

Indie Wire shared in a tweet that not nominating Ferrera for a Golden Globe “seems to fundamentally miss a big point of the film.”

Deadline referred to Ferrera as “the emotional heart of the Greta Gerwig-helmed blockbuster” when listing her among the actors and films snubbed from nominations.

Individual fans took to social media to express their discontent, as well. @sunflowroceans tweeted in response to a question about the biggest Golden Globes snubs of 2024, “America Ferrera not getting nominated for supp. actress and no one can prove me wrong.”

@cosmicveng tweeted, “The fact that America Ferrera isn’t nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes is a travesty. Her monologue in Barbie had me in tears.”

Ferrera is among other actors and actresses that fans believe were snubbed for the Golden Globes, including Viola Davis, Adam Driver, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
