How She Got There: Lauren Bosworth, Co-Founder of Revelry House

Name: Lauren Bosworth
Age: 26
Job Title and Description: Co-Founder of Revelry House
College/Major: UCLA/ Art History
Website: revelryhouse.com
Twitter Handle: @revelryhouse @lobosworth

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

Lauren Bosworth: There are no typical days at Revelry House!  I’m my own boss (along with my co-founder, Christianne), so we determine our own schedules.  It’s great because we have flexibility, but it is also challenging because we run our business [and] there are no real “off” days.  I work every day on my own schedule.

What is the best part of your job?

LB: I love that my job requires creativity every day. I especially love to design and curate the items that will go into our “Party in a Box” collections.  I am inspired by my own entertaining needs – I tend to throw a party to see what’s really necessary, I talk to my friends, family, and other women to see what they want in a collection, and go from there.

What inspired you to create Revelry House?

LB: My co-founder, Christianne (photographed with Bosworth), and I are avid entertainers, and we found that despite being known as “expert” hostesses amongst our friends, it’s still really difficult to manage pulling together an effortless gathering without some kind of formula or direction.  It’s easy to spend days going to different stores (frequently leaving empty-handed) with little sense of direction or inspiration. We started Revelry House as a solution for the modern women—we create and provide simplified, affordable solutions and creative ideas to solve to a hostess’s toughest problem.  We are for working women (and men), mothers, college students, brides, sisters, young professionals, and others who simply don’t have the time or know how to prep a party.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

LB: Being a great hostess can feel like a professional job sometimes considering all the effort and hours that goes into it!  I’ve spent years planning and throwing parties in my personal life, so I consider those first years hosting as my learning period.

What is one thing you wish you knew about your industry when you first started out that you know now?

LB: We are a commerce and content brand, and it’s difficult to give customers absolutely everything within your wheelhouse at first.  You have to start small and be okay with that, knowing you’ll have the opportunity to do more down the line as your audience grows and budget increases.

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

LB: Caroline Ghosn, [who is] the Founder of the Levo League.  She and her co-founder Amanda Pouchot really inspired me to jump into what I wanted to do.

What tips do you have for finding the perfect co-founder/ partner?

LB: Your co-founder must excel at what you have less experience in.  Don’t choose a partner that matches your skill-set.  Also, it’s imperative to choose a partner that is flexible and open to change, because all you’ll do is make changes during the first 18 months of business.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

LB: Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.  You may think you have an investor ready to come on board and end up disappointed instead.

Where do you see Revelry House in five years?

LB: I see RH as the premiere online destination for anyone throwing a party.  We’ll provide both the how-to and the goods needed to make any event a success.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

LB: I look for someone who has a focus they’re extremely passionate about.  Finding that diamond in the rough is important.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

LB: Spend six months as an intern in the field in which you are thinking about having a long-term career.  It’s better to test before committing yourself completely.

Look out for Revelry House’s holiday party boxes this November!
