The 2022 Met Gala: The Year of Ignoring the Theme

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Holy Cross chapter.

he best day of the entire year just passed: Met Gala Day! Everyone who is anyone gets all dolled up while those of us at home watch and judge. From glitz and glam, to falls and fails, the night always brings up some sort of drama or opinions. As a disclaimer, I want to acknowledge that I understand the immense amount of pressure these celebrities are under and that I will never fathom the amount of money they have. However, as an opinionated person, I definitely need to share what I think.

The theme this year was “Gilded Glamour” , in reference to New York’s Gilded Age, which occurred in the late 1870s into the early 1900s. There was so much potential with this theme, as it permitted a couple of iconic decades of American History, as well as the peak of the New York City scene. Unfortunately, most celebrities fell flat and seemed to ignore the theme.

Here are my top looks of the night:

Blake Lively

As one of the hosts of this year’s event, she had something to prove, but she met EVERY expectation. Starting at the beginning of the carpet, she was in a beautiful copper dress, detailed in a beautiful geometric pattern. As she approached the stairs, she transitioned into a light turquoise color skirt with the copper still poking through. This was an homage to the Statue of Liberty and its beauty even as it has oxidized over time. This was the best look of the night by far.

Billie Eillish

Billie is absolutely stunning both inside and out, and this look only emphasized both. She followed the theme in an elegant yet sophisticated manner. The color palette was simple which emphasized her dark and interesting facial features. This look was Gucci but completely upcycled. Billie has been focusing on spreading her message of saving the planet in any small ways possible, as most of her audience is in the new generation. I support the idea of upcycling fashion due to the fact that so many red carpet looks are worn once and then never again.

Emma Chamberlain

Simple yet elegant, Emma made sure to make the most of her invitation. She was there working for Vogue interviewing the guest on the red carpet. The interviews are honestly hilarious, and crossover events with unexpected celebrities.

Lizzo

The icon herself showed up to the red carpet in a beautiful cape with gold detailing. The simple black color with the gold detail emphasized the elegance and extravagance of the Gilded Age. The solid gold flute was the perfect accessory.

Here are the worst looks of the night:

Kylie Jenner

Her look was a tribute to the Off-White designer Virgil Abloh who passed away earlier this year. Kylie told the public that she was not worried about the opinions of the dress as it was important to her. I respect the tribute, but there was a theme to this event, and she completely ignored it. This is not the last red carpet Kylie will be on, so I do not understand the urgency in wearing this look.

Sebastian Stan

Absolute insanity. Pink? Was that color even invented in the Gilded Age? Most men do nothing special except wear a suit in one of three colors, so I have to give him credit for branching out. Once again, I just do not think this was the right event for this look.

Nicki Minaj

I think that Kylie and Nicki were going to the same event, but it certainly was not the Met Gala. I am missing the connection between the Gilded Age and black sparkles all over your body? This was a Burberry ensemble but definitely fell flat.

Addison Rae

First question, how did she get an invite? Secondly, why is she wearing a prom dress? This is like the epitome of the one mean girl in high school who buys a really expensive prom dress which is definitely not worth the money.
