I have been in a sorority for two years, one of those years was during COVID-19. Being in a sorority that year was tough because all the events were online, it was hard to meet people, and we were limited in the groups we could join. I didn’t know most of the people in my sorority until my sophomore year; however, it was worth every setback and I encourage everyone to go Greek. Sorority recruitment registration opens on May 2, so here’s some reasons to go Greek!
You’ll find your lifetime friends
You go to college for academics, but you also meet new people that will be your lifelong friends. The friends you made in high school may or may not last forever. Personally, I never felt like I had met my true friends until college. Joining a sorority makes finding friends easier. You form a special bond with all your sisters, and it’s so easy to connect with them. You also get your Big and sorority family, and they introduce you to all of their friends. Eventually you know most of the people in your sorority and always have a familiar face wherever you go. Joining one sorority means that you are joining a whole Panhellenic group. I’ve made so many friends in other houses and met their friends too. These girls will support you through your rough times and see you at your worst and at your best. They will be your shoulder to cry on and a cheerleader in your life. I can truly say I have found genuine friendships through my sorority. They are people who want the best for me, and I want the best for them. We push each other to be better, work harder, and step out of our comfort zones. They may even become the future bridesmaids that you’ve always dreamed of.
Endless cute shirts and outfits
Dressing up is critical to being a sorority girl. At the different date parties, there are unique themes to plan for. There are themes such as rave, cowboy, and colorful, as well as times when formal dresses are required. Coming prepared with accessories is a necessity and Amazon will become your best friend. Greek t-shirts and wearing your letters are also a must. It’s so fun to rep your sorority and wear the cute merch. After every event there is a new t-shirt available. It’s so hard to not buy the many shirts for your sorority. You never have to worry about not having enough t-shirts or sweatshirts to wear, as being in a sorority provides you with so many.
There are always fun events and things to do
You will never be bored in a sorority. There is always something to do, like sisterhood events and date parties. There are movie nights, tabs at different coffee shops, photoshoots, trivia nights, and so much more. Some of my best memories are at these events. Almost every day of the week offers something for you to do. Also, just because there isn’t a planned event doesn’t mean that there isn’t an activity to do. I currently live with three of my sorority sisters and we have our own movie nights, make dinner together, and go on fun adventures. Even when we don’t visit the house, we make memories with each other. If I didn’t join a sorority, I would’ve never had all these new and fun opportunities.
You’re never alone
There are around 300 to 400 girls in a sorority. At least one of these girls will share similar interests with you, be in your same major, or even from the same state as you. You are bound to meet someone you can connect and become friends with. There are so many times I have a girl in my sorority who is also in my class, and I can reach out to her if I have questions, want a study buddy, or just need a friend in the class. Also, an older girl who has already taken the class can give you advice on what teachers to take and how the tests are. Someone will always be at the house; you don’t need to eat a meal alone and you always have someone to talk to.
So many leadership opportunities and connections
Whether it’s a sorority exec position or you’re applying to another student organization, Greek Life is a great way to make connections and get involved. I’m currently the Online Media Director for my sorority, so I run all the social media accounts. We also have other positions, like the Fashion Chair, who makes Pinterest boards for photoshoots and creates different outfit looks for the chapter. Sororities can’t run without these leadership positions, and there is always a way you can help out. Not only can you get positions inside the sorority, but there are many girls in Greek Life that are in charge of different groups across campus. I am in Her Campus, like many other girls in my sorority. There are so many connections within Greek Life and around campus.
Overall, joining a sorority is such a great experience and is worth every second. There are many perks to being involved in Greek Life. If you are on the fence about joining a sorority, sign up for recruitment and Go Greek!
