Having curly hair is similar to that of having a child. It is delicate, sometimes dramatic, and reacts well to extra love and care. In my journey of navigating a society that glorifies eurocentric beauty standards, it can be incredibly difficult to fully embrace a hair type that is not consistently advertised or represented. That being said, your hair is an extension of you and the ones that came before you, so why wouldn’t you want to embrace that and nourish it? While it can be fun to change up your curls, there is something about having your hair in its most natural state that can be freeing, and it can act as the ultimate form of self care and love. Here are some reminders for the curly haired girl, because I know you need them!

Your hair is growing: shrinkage is a thing!

The reality of many curl types is that they are extremely susceptible to shrinkage. This can leave you confused as to what your hair length actually is. The truth is, your natural curl pattern does what it wants, and this is something that you can learn to love. Finding the right products and techniques are amazing ways to get that length that you want while keeping your hair natural and nourished!

Water and product work every time

I can wake up one morning with a bird’s nest of dry coils, and with a few (more than a few) sprays of water and the right curl cream, I am literally like, “Hold on, who’s hair is this?” A spray bottle is your best FRIEND, and if you feel like you’ve put enough product, you probably haven’t. Say it with me: WATER and PRODUCT are the ultimate duo.

Finding curly hair styles can be a process, but it’s worth the trial and error

Don’t be afraid to search up some tutorials on Youtube or even TikTok. While some routines may seem incredibly daunting, it’s through testing things out that you will find what works for you! Personally, I am partial to a slicked back bun look or a side part.

Scalp massages are essential (don’t believe all of the “miracle oil” hype)

I have tried many a hair growth oil in my day. From these products that have all sorts of ridiculous claims on them, I have concluded that it is more about the scalp massage itself rather than the oil you use. I find that coconut oil and biotin oil work best for me, and implementing a scalp massage for ⅔ minutes about 3 times a week can work wonders.

Silk pillowcases!

You’d be surprised at how much friction is created between your hair and your pillow while you sleep (even if you don’t toss and turn often, like me). It’s important to remember that curly hair is extremely delicate, and investing in one of these can really help your curls out in the long run. I got mine from Marshall’s for about $5!

It’s okay to be frustrated, but remember your hair is beautiful and a gift

You may not notice it, but people admire your curls! I know it’s easy to think that they don’t, but they do! When you wear your curls with confidence and love, people will take notice of that. Regardless of your hair type, be proud of it, as it reflects you and all that you are.
