What You Need To Know About ‘Fresh,’ Hulu’s New Horror Flick

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Hulu released its newest exclusive, Fresh, on March 4 and it has quickly become a popular movie for horror fans. Starring Hollywood heartthrobs Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones, this movie broke the two celebrities out of their normal acting genres.

Noa, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, is sick of modern dating and what seems like endless swiping on dating apps. Hoping to meet someone organically, she runs into Steve, played by Sebastian Stan. The beginning of the relationship is seemingly great. They spend every day together until Steve asks Noa to go on vacation with him, and then the plot of the movie begins to thicken.

“While both stylish and mischievous, it also knows when to pull back, allowing for moments of vulnerability and a chance to sit with Steve’s horrific nature,” Los Angeles Times writer Sarah-Tai Black wrote in her review of Fresh.

Fresh showcases Mimi Cave’s directorial debut and the former music video director sure knows how to use the camera to create a story. The eerie angles of the cinematography contribute to the overall suspense of the movie that constantly leaves you on the edge of your seat.

This film must be watched with quite a strong stomach, although most of my friends and I made it out of the gore-y moments unscathed. What I loved about this movie was that it didn’t focus completely on the horror that Steve caused for the main characters. The screenwriters were able to break some of the plot’s horrific tension with quick quips and jokes.

I think Fresh has a good chance of being the horror movie of the year simply because of its casting, plotline and excellent cinematography. Movies like this continually show how the movie industry is evolving from theater premieres to streaming channel premieres to accommodate easier accessibility. If you’re looking to break away from your classic rom coms (which was my goal), be sure to check out Fresh on Hulu.
