10 Quotes From New Girl That Beautifully Capture How My Adulthood Is Going

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

I’ve recently come to terms with a groundbreaking concept: being an adult is hard. It’s especially hard when you’re in that weird in-between stage, where you have to pay bills and file taxes, but you also eat dino-shaped chicken nuggets for dinner. Sometimes I catch myself thinking, “Hey! I really got the hang of this whole adulting thing!” And the other 99% of the time, I find myself thinking of these 10 hilarious, oddly specific quotes from New Girl that really reflect my adulthood experience, and make me feel extremely validated. Nothing is more comforting than realizing that not one single adult actually knows what they’re doing, and no show captures that feeling better than New Girl. Let’s dive in:

“Nick doesn’t have a life plan. He doesn’t have a day plan. I once found a note that he wrote himself that said, ‘Put on pants.’” – Jess

Being an adult means congratulating yourself for doing adult tasks, like maintaining your budget for groceries, or taking out the trash. Or, you know, putting on pants (even if you have to write yourself a reminder). It’s the little things.

“If I were off my rocker, would I take a weekly selfie with my cat?” – Winston

Hey, our pets are there for us through it all. If they slowly become your best (and possibly only) friend, don’t be alarmed. It’s all part of growing up.

“I got your text. When you’re going through a ‘Taylor Swift-like range of emotions,’ I should come over, right?” – Cece

The answer is and will always be yes.

“I’m probably fine. But I might also be dead.” – Jess

Sometimes it’s hard to tell.

“You can’t turn the sink on when someone’s in the shower; this isn’t some fancy hotel!” – Nick

Hey, we take what we can get. If there’s hot water in the shower, it’s a good day.

“You could have an emotional connection to a shoe on the side of the road.” – Cece

I can and I have. No object is too inanimate for my love.

“Schmidt fired me, and now I’ll never get to use this briefcase I bought, and it was $19!” – Nick

I’m a firm believer that being an adult is 87% looking the part and 13% faking it until you make it. Adult accessories gone to waste? Devastating.

“Well, Nick, I’m out of tears. Plumb out. Now, all that’s left is just yellowish goo. That’s right, Nick, goo.” – Schmidt

Literally me after a good cry sesh. All cried out and dried up like a raisin in the sun.

“I am not a successful adult. I don’t eat vegetables and/or take care of myself.” – Nick

Admitting it is the first step towards redemption.

“You were denied a cell phone because you have the credit score of a homeless ghost.” – Schmidt

It’s me. I’m the homeless ghost.

Well, there you have it. If you ever feel like you’re awkwardly stumbling through adulthood, just recall these quotes and remember you aren’t alone. The more stumbles you have, the more hilarious your life stories will be when you look back on them. That’s a silver lining…right? Yeah, let’s go with that.
