Hot Take: Valentine’s Day Is Overrated

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lynn chapter.

Sadly, yes, it is that time of the year again. If you’re like me, Valentine’s Day is just a regular day that you celebrate loving yourself. I understand Valentine’s Day can be special for couples and those who are truly in love but honestly it’s not that big of a deal. If you love someone this day should not be any different than any other day. You should celebrate loving that person every day and celebrate loving yourself every day.

I got a bit of a fright when I walked into Target in the middle of January and saw all the red and pink Valentine’s Day decorations and chocolates. It wasn’t even February yet and people were starting to plan Valentine’s Day. In my honest opinion, it’s just a day that is supposedly full of love but really it’s just a day where chocolates and flowers are given out. If you’re lucky enough your partner might take you out to dinner but nowadays people seem to be so busy that they can’t even get the chance.

We don’t need flowers and chocolates to survive and I don’t understand why this is a way of showing someone you love them. If we think about it, flowers and chocolates are very common things that you can buy any other day of the year so why is it so special on Valentine’s Day? Don’t get me wrong everyone loves receiving and giving  flowers but it shouldn’t be just on Valentine’s Day. People should celebrate love every day! There’s nothing better than the feeling when somebody spontaneously sends you flowers and chocolates for no valid reason. In my opinion, that is the correct way to give out flowers and chocolates.

I’m not saying that on Valentine’s Day you shouldn’t do these things as it’s still very special as it’s the day of love. I am trying to say that don’t just put all the effort in one day but also treat your loved one a little extra sometimes regardless of the day. Also, Valentine’s Day can be very expensive as people know everyone will be buying chocolates and flowers but love is a natural occurrence so therefore you should pay no price for it.
