Valentine’s Day for Single Romantics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emmanuel chapter.

For many people, Valentine’s Day is just another dreaded reminder of how single they are. They avoid Instagram on the 14th so no lovey dovey posts of people who’ve been in 6 year relationships showcase how happy their lives are. Although Valentine’s Day can feel lonely for so many people, I think that changing your mindset about the holiday makes it so much better. In all of my 18 years of living, I’ve never had a “valentine.” And still, it remains my favorite holiday.

A day all about love where you can wear as much pink as your heart desires and no one can judge you is my dream right off the bat. There are so many things you can do on February 14th that don’t require a committed relationship but will make your heart happy.

  1. Listen to endless amounts of Taylor Swift—the expert on writing about love in every sense of the word.
  2. Buy someone you care about a coffee/tea.
  3. Practice self love (the most important love). Do a face mask, take an extra long shower, take the time to journal.
  4. Keep rose quartz, the crystal known for inviting love into one’s life, in your pockets.
  5. Watch Pride & Prejudice (the version with Colin Firth, obviously).

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. It’s hard to not feel lonely on Valentine’s Day, or disappointed with your relationship status. Comparing where you are right now with other people or where you want to be is a sure way to create disappointment. Fill your day with the love you have for friends and family, and you will come to dread the 14th a little bit less.
