A College Girl’s Guide to Becoming a Morning Person

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Alabama chapter.

What does being a “morning person” really mean? College students usually get little to no sleep every night, which makes it difficult to get into a proper morning routine. Here’s some realistic advice on what it takes to become a morning person in college.

Morning workouts

Many people incorporate morning workouts to get their day started on the right foot both physically and mentally! I’m all for getting your heart rate up early in the morning, and this is something that changed my own daily routine. Accomplishing a goal in the morning sets the stage for your entire day and sets you up for success. Your workout does not have to be at the crack of dawn, but if you can do it before work or class, it’s something I highly, highly recommend. Try to find a form of exercise that you enjoy most, so that you’ll actually feel motivated in the morning to get out of bed and do it!

Wind down

This is definitely a cliché, but get into bed as early as you possibly can. If you have the option to watch television in your bed or on your couch, I always opt for my bed. Obviously, I don’t suggest getting back in bed in the middle of the day, but if it’s late at night, watching TV or reading a book in bed is the way to go. Every time I do this, I get so tired and end up falling asleep dramatically fast.

Look forward to tomorrow!

Last, but surely not least, go to bed thinking about something you’re excited for. Every night when I get into bed, I think about my morning coffee. It may sound simple, but it’s something I look forward to each morning. On those days when I am having an especially hard time getting up, I know that I have a hot cup of coffee waiting for me, and it makes it just a little easier to roll out of the comfort and warmth of my bed.

Often, the fantasy of being a morning person seems far-fetched. It’s not always easy to get into a new habit, but with these tips, you can be on your way to seizing each day! Being a morning person doesn’t mean you have to be up at 6 AM each day but making a conscious effort to be “early to bed and early to rise” can make a huge difference in your daily routine and overall mood. Figure out what it takes to set yourself up for success each day and put your mind to it!
