State College Businesses You Need To Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

Oftentimes, when I stumble upon advertisements for huge corporations on social media, I’m reminded by how important it is to shop local. I am no saint when it comes to online shopping — I often indulge. However, I also challenge myself to find similar products around town. State College is dripping with local businesses that survive thanks to student business. According to Chron, small businesses employed about 58.9 million people in 2018. Local businesses are such an integral piece of our community that must be supported. If you don’t know where to start, no need to worry. I am about to let you in on some local spots to relieve all of your shopping-therapy needs.

The Douglas Albert Gallery

I am a jewelry fiend and The Douglas Albert Gallery is my personal heaven. It is a rarity that you will find me without an assortment of mix-matched dangling earrings covering my ears. I can only thank this wonderful gallery for supplying my favorite pieces. While this is on the more expensive side, it is a great spot to get a “higher-end” gift for Mom, Dad, or a very special friend. Prices widely vary, however the quality and authenticity of each item is unbeatable. douglas albert

Uncle Eli’s

Uncle Eli’s is The Douglas Albert Gallery’s younger brother. While they are under the same ownership, Eli’s is a little bit more affordable. Rings, posters, necklaces, candles — the knick-knack hub of your dreams. This is my personal go-to for gifts for my friends. Every little thing in this store has its own quirk and personality. No matter who I need a gift for, Eli’s will have something that perfectly fits. Uncle Eli’s is located at 129 East Beaver Avenue.

The Animal Kingdom

My bed is covered in stuffed animals. I love the nostalgia but also the simple “cuddly-ness.” Since I was just a mini-Cate, I have flocked to The Animal Kingdom. “Kingdom” is no understatement for this purely stuffed animal filled store. A go-to gift for friends is always a small plush or a plush keychain ($7-$10!). A signature of mine when gift giving is a Pusheen — my all-time favorite. For my little cousins, I always get an adorable Jellycat plush. The Animal Kingdom is located at 103 South Allen Street.

Appalachian Outdoors

Penn State’s big, open campus fills that part in my heart that loves nature. Walking to and from class, in the fresh air, is a treat for me no matter the weather. A place that really nurtures that love for the outdoors is Appalachian Outdoors. You can find brands such as Patagonia, The North Face, and Columbia. As the snowy season approaches, Appalachian Outdoors is the place to gear up the cold. My nature loving friends and family always love a new Hydroflask, a warm hat, or a comfy hammock. They are located at 131 South Allen Street.

Webster’s Bookstore Cafe

Finding a book for a person that they will genuinely want to read is a true skill. If done correctly, a good book can be such a meaningful gift. Webster’s Bookstore Cafe is a library of used books varying from poetry and cookbooks to political manifestos. For those who are not “bookworms,” Webster’s also has a very hearty collection of vinyls. It is easy to get lost in the shelves of endless gift opportunities. They are located at 133 East Beaver Avenue.

Happy shopping local!

I am a first year student studying political science. My two loves are cooking and being outside. I love my two pets Winnie, a chocolate lab, and Craig, a beta fish. When I am not studying in my room, you will probably find me outside playing tennis, walking, or doing yoga. I am originally from State College, PA. <3
