If you’re a writer or a writing arts major, you might understand how frustrating it is to battle writer’s block. If you don’t know what writer’s block is, it’s basically when you lack inspiration or motivation to tap into your creative side. It can last for hours, days, weeks, months, or even years and it takes some work getting out of this creative slump. Let’s talk about some ways you can overcome it.

Don’t feel ashamed

There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Every writer at some point in their life has struggled with writer’s block. Personally, when I struggled with writer’s block, I felt like I was just being lazy, but laziness and lack of inspiration are two different things. It is completely normal to feel this way, and it won’t last forever. Trust me, you’ll be writing again soon.

Talk to someone

Talking to someone is a great way to get out of the creative slump. Whether you have something else on your mind or you need to gain inspiration, talking to friends or family is a great way to combat both of those issues.

Change your scenery

Think about where you usually write. Whether it be at a desk, or your bed, or the library or wherever. Sometimes the environment around you can contribute to your lack of inspiration, given it is the same space you’ve written at. Switching up your scenery might allow for more inspiration.

Take a break

Sometimes the best thing you can do is just walk away from the screen (or pen and paper.) Focusing too hard on writing can be counterproductive. Moreso, you can even walk away from your project and likely find inspiration from somewhere else.

Take care of yourself

Lastly, and most importantly, it’s important to take care of yourself. The four abovementioned topics are helpful in taking care of yourself, but also practicing good physical and mental health can help you lose writer’s block.
