Every year thousands of girls go missing, and in most of these circumstances, many of these abductions could have been prevented but weren’t due to a lack of crucial regulations that had not been enforced. In the most recent case of Miya Marcano, her life was put in danger because her apartment complex didn’t have the correct privacy protocols in place.
Marcano went missing around 5 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the Arden Villas Apartments near the University of Central Florida. Armando Manuel Caballero, a maintenance worker at Marcano’s building, had shown romantic interest in her but was rejected several times. Later it was confirmed from the Orange County sheriff’s office that the deadbolt to Marcano’s apartment was opened by an on-call maintenance key fob known to be in Caballero’s possession.
Following this tragedy of Miya Marcano, Marlon Hill and UCF’S minority organization have now set up a petition for Arden Villas to enact proper safety measures and are now accepting witness testimony forms for the Miya Marcano law. Hill is an experienced corporate government transactions lawyer of over 25 years.
Their main goal for the Miya Marcano law is to require property management companies and landlords to provide notice and make appointments for any “repairs” access unless an incident of loss of life or property.
