As Halloween approaches, it has led me to think critically about the ghost of Halloween’s past. Every year I get swept up in this storm of wanting a perfect outfit or outfits for a fun Halloweek-end. Yet somehow every year I end up with a last-minute costume and a subpar night. To prohibit this from happening again, I’ve compiled a list of lessons I’ve learned from Halloweens past in order to have the best Halloweekend this year.

Don’t spend too much money on a costume

This is just one or two…or three drunk nights of fun and I always seem to forget that. I almost always end up in a crisis of last-minute shopping, and so I have no choice but to spend all my money on a cute/subpar costume. To avoid this, try planning ahead of time and checking what you have buried deep in your closet.

Always have something warm as a backup

I know us Canadian girls are a different breed and all, but sometimes I forget just how damn cold Halloween nights can be. Every year I always say screw it and don’t bring a coat or a long sleeve, and as a result I always end up freezing my ass off. This year, I’ve found warmer options to add to my costumes just as a backup in case I need it.

Decorate your house

I feel like I really need to milk this whole Halloween thing and I almost always forget to do so. Decorating your house for Halloween a few weeks earlier will surely get your mind in the Halloween spirit. Halloween is fun…why wouldn’t we want more time with the spooky season?

Parties over the bars

Lately, I’ve been feeling like this is a given on any night…but especially for special occasions like Halloween. Something about the atmosphere of a house party is so much better than a crowded bar for this kind of event.

Don’t blackout on the first night

Hallo-weekend only comes once a year. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Keep this in mind while starting Hallo-weekend off strong.

Watch the footwear

Again, you never know what Hallo-weekend weather brings, so always be prepared for the worst. I would avoid heels at all costs and refrain from wearing any of your favourite/expensive shoes as they will most likely get ruined.

Don’t pick an offensive costume

This is a given. Don’t do it. There’s no reason. That is all.

just have fun!

Halloween is such a unique holiday as it kind of allows you to be someone else for the night. This is one of the wildest party nights of the fall semester, so have fun, be yourself and go crazy. Don’t be afraid to dress up super scandalous or dress up as something wacky and weird. This night is what you make it, so just do you.

All in all, Halloween is supposed to be a fun and spooky time. Go be wild, spooky, crazy and remember above all to be safe!
