Social media seems to be getting more and more materialistic and shallow, yet I still find myself invested in checking my Instagram account as well as catching up with the lives of others. I know other people share that same obsession, especially with the emergence of “influencers” whose feeds seem too flawless and carefully crafted to be true.

I have become invested in making my Instagram page aesthetically pleasing, but sometimes I just wish I could go back to not caring so much about whether or not an image belongs on my Instagram page. Some of my friends and I even went as far as downloading an app that pre plans your feed for you so you can see if your images look good together. Before I even post something I often think, is this going to get enough likes? Is it even worth it to post? This constant back and forth with myself begs the question, are Instagram feed themes extra? Or are they simply a way of channeling our vibe and showing our personality?

The answer is not a simple one, and I’m not even sure if there is an answer, considering some people make a living off of making sure their appearance and their Instagram page is on point. Oftentimes, it is a human tendency to compare ourselves with others, and I know that I’ve had many instances where this comparison has not benefited me. When it comes to concluding whether or not “feed planning” has gotten too serious, it’s definitely more of an individualistic matter. If you find yourself getting too invested in social media and appearances, it’s not a bad idea to take a little break from Instagram. I am a very curious person, so I know my break would definitely not last long and I’d be wondering what everyone is up to. But, it really boils down to whether or not you think it will help or hurt your own self esteem. If you also want Instagram to go back to the casual, fun app it used to be, start a movement yourself. Post whatever you want–whether it’s a photo dump or something funny you want to share with your followers. Even if you don’t receive as many comments or likes, someone out there will appreciate this free spirited approach.

If you find yourself persistently invested in a certain aesthetic like I am, then knock yourself out. Just make sure you don’t lose yourself in the process. Consider those influencers you compare yourself with an inspiration for your own feed rather than someone that you envy. You’ll have way more fun with social media by changing your mindset, and that fun will shine through your Instagram one way or another!

Holy Cross '24

Hi everyone! My name is Larissa Nunes and I am originally from Framingham, MA, but I also have family and spent some of my childhood in Brazil. I plan to major in the humanities on a pre-law track because writing and journaling have always been one of my favorite things to do. In addition to that, I was also a ballet dancer for 11 years. I enjoy talking about politics as well as fashion and lifestyle. I have a wide array of passions, so writing for Her Campus is the perfect way to express myself while appealing to different interests and types of people!
