It’s about that time of year. It’s past August, so syllabus week is over, but not October yet, so we’re not used to actual work. Instead, slumped September is upon us. A time where college students begin to get hit with real work, hard deadlines and exam after exam after exam.

During this trying time, it’s easy to drift away from those closest to you (literally). When was the last time you’ve hung out with your roommates? In college, it can be so easy to drift away from the person you share a lease, kitchen or even room with. But no more! Right now, you will A. Give yourself some free/relaxation time and, B. Re-kindle some get-to-know-you and catch-up time with your roomies.

Here are some of the best movies to sit down and watch with your roommate(s), in no order.

1. He’s all that (netflix)

Hear me out, hear me out! You know this movie, from the endless TikTok videos mocking it. But have you watched it yourself, or more importantly: have you watched it with other people?

He’s All That is the 2021 remake of She’s All That, but now staring TikTok dancer Addison Rae, Tanner Buchanan, Madison Pettis and Peyton Meyer. Every person is different, and that means that every roommate pairing is also very different. Whether you live with one, two, or three others- movies can be overwhelming because EVERYONE has different tastes and opinions.

This is a fun movie that will help you and your roommates numb your brains for a little more than an hour and a half; it will for sure get you all laughing at something together.

2. Booksmart (HULU)

A great, exciting movie, with a variety of stand-out characters and a lot of heart. It follows Molly (played by Beanie Feldstein) as valedictorian of her graduating class and her relationship with her best friend Amy (Kaitlyn Dever). This film goes through the two nerdy seniors trying to make the last night of their high school days one to remember, exploring themes of friendship, sexuality and fulfillment. Definitely a great laugh-along movie that will make everyone think in the end and have a great time while doing so.

3. The nightmare before christmas (DIsney +)

With Halloween quickly approaching, this is the perfect animated film to get everyone in a spooky mood! The Tim Burton stop-motion classic is widely well known and could be ideal for a weeknight or a busier time for everyone, as it’s a shorter film that’s still a lot of fun!

4. Someone great (netflix)

Alright, now this one for sure brings a new mood to the table. This film focuses on Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) and how she deals with the breakup from her long-term boyfriend, Nate (LaKeith Stanfield). My recommendation: only watch this if you are all mentally stable. There are a lot of comical scenes, and a great theme of self-love and friendship, but creating a crying circle won’t be too hard once you hit play. But I mean, maybe a group crying session will bring you all closer! (Great movie, emotionally stable or not; just maybe don’t watch if one of your roommates is going through boyfriend or girlfriend problems).

5. when harry met sally (HBO max)

On a lighter note! Starting as friends of friends from college, Sally (Meg Ryan) and Harry (Billy Crystal) begin on rocky ground and swear to never see each other again (spoilers: that doesn’t follow through). The film takes us through their lives and how they continuously bump into each other and eventually form a deep connection. This is a cute enemies-to-friends-to-lovers movie that is sure to make everyone ‘awe’ and blush at LEAST once. It also has a very comedic side to it, including of course the iconic: “I’ll have what she’s having” scene.

6. legally blonde (netflix)

What, like it’s not a classic? We all know the stellar story of Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) but it’s a whole new experience to watch the movie with friends: repeating lines with each other, sharing fun stories about the movie and of course gasping when Ms. Woods lays all her cards down in that ending courtroom scene.

Show speed round!

  • The Great British Baking Show (Netflix)

A hilarious and relaxing series full of fun baking ideas, and top-notch British humor. A very fun, simple and easy-to-follow show. Who knows! Maybe it could inspire you all to have a cook-off of your own!

  • Billy on the Street (Netflix)

Following comedian Billy Eichner as he runs through the streets of New York to find the most interesting people and ask the weirdest questions. With only 20-minute episodes, this is a hilarious and quick watch session with the roomies. It’s also not a series that builds off itself, which means you can just find the episodes with your favorite celebrity cameos and jump around from there!

  • What If…? (Disney +)

Even if a roommate or two are not the biggest Marvel followers, this animated show is easy to watch with its interesting variety of plots and characters. A super creative and easy show to all connect on.

  • Schitt’s Creek (Netflix)

You probably won’t be able to stop your roommates from saying “DAVID!” the whole next day (or week) but it’s always a fun time, especially when you all need to get some homework done too; nothing wrong with adding some necessary work time into the equation of roomies and a movie. This is probably one of the more plot heavier shows, but also has a lot of comedic filler.

I know this was all a lot, but don’t worry! There are a variety of options for a reason, and who’s stopping you from making a watch list with your roomies right now? Happy watching!
