A new school semester has begun, and many of us are returning to in-person, online, or hybrid classes this time around. Because of this mix of class options and schedules, here are a few essentials that I discovered for this school semester.

  1. Portable Charger

I learned the hard way to carry a portable charger because I struggled to find charging ports or stations on campus. Having a charging port is especially important if you will be on campus while taking Zoom classes and using digital devices for notes in class.  Some remote learning classrooms don’t have charging stations, so it is best to be prepared with a portable charger.

  1. Comfortable Walking Shoes

Many students this fall are beginning their first semester on campus, and they probably didn’t realize how much walking is required to get from class to class. It also doesn’t help that campus is full of hills, so comfortable walking shoes are a must!

  1. Sweater

Berkeley weather can be unpredictable; there might be sunshine in the morning and gloominess in the afternoon. Therefore, a sweater for when the weather shifts to cold is life-saving (especially if you have classes all day). Many classrooms keep the windows open for air circulation, which makes the room cold!

  1. Backpack

Tote bags are super cute but not as practical as a backpack. This essential might also be better for a combination of in-person and remote classes, as it allows for more space for other crucial items like a sweater, laptop, water bottle, and more.

  1. Masks and Hand Sanitizer

Last but not least, masks and hand sanitizer are both must-haves this semester. It is never a bad thing to have extra masks in your school bag or car just in case.

With these essentials in mind, you will be prepared for your classes and get back into the routine of being on campus. Things are still a little confusing and overwhelming, but remember to take breaks when needed and make sure you feel comfortable going to your classes. Good luck this fall semester!
