Spotted Off-Campus: Pilot Mountain

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Over fall break I decided to check off one of the many items on my Wake Forest Bucket List, the ever growing list of things I need to do before I graduate.  Off in the distance, I’d never really noticed Pilot Mountain, a large bump on the North Carolina horizon to the north west.  We live in a pretty flat state and I’d been told since freshman year that this little mountain offered quite the view but it always seemed out of the way.  Now that my time at Wake is rapidly dwindling, I decided to take an adventure there.  Just a 25 minute drive away, Pilot Mountain is the perfect place to get some exercise and explore outside the Wake Forest bubble.  I ventured up the mountain this past Friday with a few friends and one of their dogs.  The skies were crisp and crystal clear, the perfect Carolina blue.  The drive up the mountain takes you to the base of the “Knob” where there are plenty of overlooks and places to walk around.  For the more adventurous, there are several trails down and around the Knob.  My friends and I chose to take the Jomeokee Trail, a “moderate” .8 mile path around the base of the Knob.  Now be careful, the sign may appear to say 8 miles, but don’t be fooled, it’s not nearly that strenuous.  We survived the hike and roamed around the general area for a couple of hours afterwards, enjoying the good old outdoors.  I found myself having frequent flashbacks to my days at sleep away camp, to hikes filled with singing and peanut butter sandwiches.   If you find yourself free on a sunny, cool weekend, don’t hesitate to make the quick trip up to Pilot Mountain for a little hiking.  You won’t be disappointed.  Enjoy some photos from my adventure here.

Her upbringing in Connecticut, otherwise known as country club land, inspired her to write in order to escape and locate something more. Writing has also acted as her outlet to dabble in subjects far beyond her my intellectual capacity: art, culture, design, fashion, photography, and music. Other than reading Vogue and Vanity Fair cover-to-cover, Kelsey enjoys frequenting the blogosphere, speaking franglais in daily conversation, and laughing at her own pathetic jokes.
