A How To On: Looking for Internships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Simmons chapter.

It is only February but as crazy as it seems it is time to start planning for the summer. For many college students planning means applying to internships. Starting the process can be daunting but Her Campus Simmons is here to help. Here are three resources to help you start the search process:

1.     Career websites – websites like Ed2010, Intern Queen are great places to find internships. The websites are updated daily with new posting. Each post includes a description of the internship and a contact email.  You can also narrow the search by city and career.

2.     Networking – it is the one piece of advice everyone will give. Networking is key to finding out about opportunities that websites do not post. Talk with your professors, friends, and family members. Everyone has connections.  Also don’t be afraid to ask! If you have a friend working for a company your interested ask her if they are hiring any interns. She can put you in contact with the best person to speak with and put in a good word.

3.  Simmons Career Education Center- The Simmons Career Education Center is a great resource! They receive internship postings from alum and companies in the Boston area. Staff members can also help you write your resume and set up a mock interview. An added bonus is that this resource is free even after you graduate!

Looking for internships can be overwhelming but if you use these three resources you will soon land the internship of your dreams!

Alexandra Hakim is a sophomore at Simmons College where she is majoring in Communications specifically Public Relations and Marketing. Growing up in Palm Beach Gardens Florida, Alexandra wanted a change of scenery and moved to Boston. She became such a fan of the city that she decided to stay for the summer and intern for a local event planner. At Simmons, Alexandra is a member of the Public Relations Student Society. When she is not busy with school, she loves venturing around Boston with friends, frozen yogurt, sailing, and watching Hugh Grant movies. Alexandra is ecstatic about the opportunity to bring Her Campus to Simmons College.
