One Last Chance to Get to Know the Candidates!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCSU chapter.

Here it is ladies and gentlemen, your last chance to get to know these candidates (running for more than one position). These are either written by the candidates themselves, or by their supporters who wanted to share a little bit more about them before you make the big decision! Don’t forget, elections are Tuesday, March 29th!

Meet Scott Goldsmith, John Tucker, Jackie Smith, and Chandler Thompson!

Scott Goldsmith: Student Senate Presidential Candidate

I’m running for Student Senate President on March 29th. I’m a junior in political science and philosophy and have been in the student senate for two years. I’ve grown up in Raleigh and my parents also went to NC State, making this University a family tradition. Unlike most elected offices, Student Senate President Candidates don’t have a laundry list of campaign platforms and promises you can expect them to break. It is our job to be the referee in the room for the 64 student senators that are elected each year. Not having particular platforms or loyalties is what is needed in an ideal candidate, so as to allow the student senators, and thus the student voice, to be heard as the senate argues over bills. I have a broad array of support within the Student Senate, making me an ideal candidate to lead them in the year to come.

John Tucker: Senior Class Presidential Candidate

My name is John Tucker, I’m a junior in Political Science and I want to represent the NC State Class of 2012 as the Senior Class President! I’m a devoted Wolfpack fan and have thoroughly enjoyed my first three years here at the greatest university in the world and cannot wait to have the greatest year our my time here.

Platform- What is the role of the Senior Class President? One word- Unity. It is the job of the SCP to unite seniors in an effort to leave a lasting legacy at NC State. I think that I can help our class to leave a legacy that will always be remembered at NC State, and that will be the benchmark for years to come.

What are the responsibilities of the Senior Class President?
-To fundraise money for the senior class gift (which seniors get to decide).
-To plan and host events catered towards seniors that are fun and exciting!
-To find ways of engaging seniors and helping to send them off into the real world: I’ll do this by hosting programs that are specifically designed for seniors preparing to enter the job market

Overall, the Senior Class President has to be someone who is personable, fun and above all else loves North Carolina State University.

As a rising senior and very involved student on NC State’s campus, I have the experience needed to be the best Senior Class President possible. Through my previous organizational experiences I’ve learned what it takes to accomplish great things on this campus, and want to help the Class of 2012 leave their mark on North Carolina State University.

Just a few of my leadership positions so far include being a Student Senator for the past two years, serving as chair of three different committees and the President Pro Tempore. I was president of my fraternity and am now the president of the Interfraternity Council.

I have a lot of experience working with administrators and other campus leaders that will provide very useful when it comes to working with the University to support us in our endeavor of leaving a legacy at NC State.

At North Carolina State University, we strive for excellence. We’ve worked hard for three years and have just one more left to celebrate. Help me help you to leave your mark on this university, while celebrating what will be the best year of your college experience.

Jackie Smith: Senior Class Presidential Candidate

Below is what Jackie plans to do as our Senior Class President, if elected.

Improved networking with Alumni- The University has many great resources to assist students with the job searching process, in addition to helping better connect students with those sources, I will take it one step further. Networking is an important part of finding a job, I will help connect students and alumni to help students make the connections they need to help get them a job.

Improved Senior ticketing and nightlife- Every senior deserves to get a ticket to their last home game, I will work with Athletics to help make sure this happens. Also, with the stress of senior year we need to remember every now and then we need to have fun, I’ll make sure there are opportunities for seniors to have fun during their final year here.

Make class rings more affordable- With the tough economic times we are in, many students are unable to afford a class ring that would like one. I will work to make sure there are opportunities available for seniors to get rings at a lower price, everyone deserves the opportunity to buy a ring to help them remember all the great times they’ve had here at NC State.

I also want to speak personally on her as well. I’ve known Jackie for a little over 2 years now and I’ve always been impressed with her work ethic and positive attitude. Perhaps one of the most important traits about her is that she will work until she gets the job done! This position like all others she has been involved in are not a simple resume booster but a way to make a difference on this University. Jackie is not only involved with campus through Student Government with me, she is a member of AASAP and a co-founding sister of Kappa Delta at NC State where she currently serves as the social chair. I share her involvement not to simply show off she is involved, but as an indicator that her platform points are attainable.

The first point of networking, the career center is a great resource and one that I’ve used multiple times. Their work in revising resumes, giving mock interviews, and other tips to help get jobs however may not be enough with the job market in the current condition. The real secret is knowing someone on the outside that can help you get “in” somewhere. Through working with AASAP, Jackie has the ability to connect students and alumni creating the opportunity for students to network their way into the jobs they want.

As for the improved senior life, having been involved with Student Government in the past, Jackie will be able to work to ensure that seniors are awarded tickets to their last home game which is only fair considering the years of support that seniors have put into the program. It’s also important to have a little fun your senior year, Jackie has planned many programs and events, and I think her experience as the Kappa Delta social chair is evidence she knows how to plan fun events. -Finally the point on class rings, again being a member of AASAP comes into play as they are involved with selling of class rings. Jackie has already began to explore opportunities where there would be special promotions to help make class rings more affordable to students such as myself who LOVE N.C. State but may not be able to afford a class ring to help me remember my times here.

ChandlerThompson: Student Body Presidential Candidate

Leader of the Pack, founding sister of Kappa Delta at NCSU, member of NCSU traditions, committed friend and volunteer, and possibly the 2011-2012 Student Body President? Not many people can take all this on with the confidence and ease like Chandler Thompson.

Thompson, a junior majoring in Economics and minoring in Political Science, is the definition of a true Wolfpack fan. “My dad raised me to be red and white for life. I spent my childhood Saturdays in the fall tagging along with my father to Wolfpack football games at Carter-Finley stadium,” said Thompson. “He used the 1 hour and 20 minute drive to Raleigh to teach me lessons about NC State, life, and what that awful place called Chapel Hill at exit 270 was.”

As president, Thompson is campaigning for longer tailgating hours (Come on- who doesn’t want that!), a fourth meal on campus (remember those times you just want a late night sub?) and a centralized calendar (With one click of a button, you’ll find all the important events on campus). Thompson believes that with these changes, student life will improve. “Keeping and improving the value of your degree will be one of my top priorities,” said Thompson. “I will make sure that students have representation on any committee dealing with the budget and that the voice of students are heard.”
Thompson’s love for NC State is obvious. She is involved in numerous activities on campus and was named the 2010 Leader of the Pack. She is a member of Campus Pals, a CSLEPS organization, and a member of the Traditions committee in Student Government. Along with her team in traditions, she helped redesign two projects; a card deck with “54 Things to Do At NC State,” and The Brick, a book of history and traditions at NCSU. “I want to use my experience in campus life to improve the student experience at NC State. I’m passionate about this school. I want it to be a great place to learn, work, and go to class,” said Thompson.

At the end of the day, Chandler Thompson’s love for NC State makes her an excellent candidate for Student Body President. “My life has always been and continues to be defined by loving this place and living in red.”

NOTE: *Her Campus NCSU is not endorsing any of these candidates. We are just providing an opportunity to those candidates who wanted it, one last chance to get their name and intentions heard before the elections!

Good Luck to all candidates!
