Five Fun Ways to Spice Up Your Living Space

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Your dorm room or apartment is your home away from home for the entire school year so it’s important to make it feel as cozy and relaxing as possible. You may have acquired a total new sense of freedom, but college living is a far cry from the comforts of home. Luckily, you can completely personalize your space to make yourself feel more at home. No matter how large or small the space, it’s easy to run out of fun, creative decorating ideas. The following suggestions are wonderful ways to add some extra flavor to your living space!  Try some of these ideas and discover how easy it is to maximize your space while also giving your room or apartment some additional flair.

Mix and Match

Having a great color scheme is one of the best ways to add some pizazz to your living space. Whether you’re into bright colors, bold patterns or solid neutrals, a good color scheme is an eye-catching way to brighten and enliven your space. Don’t be afraid to mix and match; pairing different colors and patterns is easy to do, but it will pay off well and give your place some character. For example, match polka-dotted pillows in black and white with fun-colored bedding, or get curtains in a quirky pattern that draws from the main color scheme of your belongings or your bedding.

Flowers
Adding plants and flowers is an easy and lovely way to make your space look homey and attractive. Buy fresh flowers weekly and place them in a pretty, decorative vase for your dresser or coffee table. If fresh flowers aren’t to your liking, get fake flowers from any crafts store and put them into glass vases with rocks or pebbles for a creative and different decorative touch.

Pictures and Collages
It’s a no-brainer that pictures are fantastic ways to personalize your space. However, you can do more with pictures than just putting them in regular store-bought frames or sticking them on a memo or message board. Buy cheap frames from a crafts store, paint and decorate them, and then replace the glass with cork-board to create cute, quirky picture frames that are hand-made. You can also make collages, glue them on cork-board and place them into large picture frames. No matter how you choose to display your favorite photographic memories, try to do it in a fun, creative way so they can easily be noticed.

Accessorize with Mementos
There are tons of different ways to turn junk into treasure; this also applies to accessorizing your dorm room or apartment! For example, collect store bags from your favorite retail shops and hang them on a fashionable pole that can be hung from the wall or situated nicely in a corner of the room. Attach pins, postcards and travel photos to a board for your wall or shelf. You can also tie ribbon around your doorknobs or use ribbon to hang lettered initials as wall art. Original art done by you, a relative, or friend is also a bonus, as well as painting any object or accessory that you think is bland or boring. Think of unconventional and unique ways to give an extra boost to your décor that no one else may have!

Lighting
Lighting is seriously underrated. It can transform a room and can set the right mood. String tiny lamps across a wall or even use Christmas lights or colorful bulbs. Make your own lampshades by using a variety of fabrics like lace to cast a cool glow in your space. Painting the base of a ceramic lamp, adding light-up accessories or miniature chandeliers are some more lighting ideas that are perfect for adding a personal touch to the decoration of your room.
