Restaurant Review: Pat & Lorraine’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oxy chapter.

If you’re like me, you’ve already become tired of the same old Marketplace breakfast. The waffles and tater tots don’t seem to bring the thrill they once did and a person can only wait in the omelet line for so long before they start to go crazy.  Luckily for us, Pat and Lorraine’s Coffee Shop sits .8 miles away nestled on the corner of Eagle Rock Boulevard and Ridgeview Avenue.

The shop is a diner-style breakfast restaurant with an outside patio area.  It opens at 6:30 a.m. everyday, closes at 3 p.m. on weekends and closes at 2:30 p.m. on weekdays. Among the range of food offered are eggs benedict, french toast, hot cakes, biscuits and gravy, and a ton of omelets to choose from.  I ordered the three hotcakes and they brought out three gigantic pancakes about 6-inches in diameter.   Everything has big portion sizes, so you can bring the leftovers back to your dorm to eat later.

If you’re thinking about heading over there I recommend sitting in the patio area.  A white fence covered in vines encloses it and blocks out the street view so you can pretend to be some place else.  If you are worried about being cold, don’t be – they have hard-core heaters placed next to several tables. Also, not as many people sit outside so you will have a more relaxing experience and you will be able to enjoy the mix of modern and oldies music.  If you’re a fan of classic movies, however, you should sit in the diner area.  Apparently part of Reservoir Dogs was filmed there.

In terms of money, the meal was a little pricey, but they offer a 10% discount to Oxy students on the weekdays.  Plus, the prices should seem relatively normal compared to some of the outrageous Marketplace and Cooler prices.

Also, if you’re experiencing a bit of homesickness, sitting down at a nice, homey restaurant can help.  The familiarity and comfort of being waited on is a great escape from the overwhelming college life.

Tip: You have to walk to the register to pay…figured that out after ten minutes of waiting for the waitress.
