Mercer SGA Hosts Pie Your Senator

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mercer chapter.

Seniors came out to Porter Patch to cream some of their favorite class senators at SGA’s first annual Pie Your Senator fundraising event.

“I still smell the whipped cream on my face. Even though I was getting pied, I felt invigorated for the students,” said Christina Vasquez, senior class president.

The event was geared towards raising money for the senior class gift that SGA funds. Students could “pie” their senator of choice for $1 throughout the day from 10 a.m. -2 p.m.

They also asked students to bring their ideas for something they would like to see on Mercer’s campus. These brainstorming ideas could help the senior class gift committee decide on what could be chosen as the parting gift to Mercer from the senior class of 2012.

She came up with the idea for the fundraiser from an idea online, while she was researching the different ways that other colleges did fundraisers and decided to give it a Mercer twist.

“Dean Pearson said that a real senior gift is one that students come together and raise money for, and we made history because we are the first senior class to raise money for the senior,” said Vasquez.
Not only did the senators get pied but a few choice faculty members as well such as Dr. Pearson Dean of Students.

Students raised $132 for the senior gift fund. “The turnout could have been better, but we are grateful for those that did come out,” said Vasquez.

She believes that this was a nice start in boosting morale for the seniors; SGA is planning on having more fundraisers in the spring. SGA is now on facebook, so stay tuned to their facebook page. Students can also check out the SGA website or attend a meeting.

No decisions have been made on the senior gift, and student suggestions for the gift are highly recommended!
