Q & A:

Q: What advice do you have to get your first job?

A: Have confidence and be willing to do anything. Even just offering to go into the company and be a fly on the wall will give you an advantage. Find a way to show the company that the skills you have can fit into the company and benefit them.

Q: What can you do ahead of time to prepare?

A: Starting a blog of the work you’ve done or writing samples can be your calling card and set you apart from competitors. Make sure you do your research on the company and the person you are meeting with before you go in. It’s something that your professors tell you to do but you’d be amazed how many people don’t do their homework and the difference it has when you do. Something that would really set you apart would be tailoring your portfolio pieces to give context. Start off by saying what the problem was, your solution, and then the impact the end result had. Almost like setting up a case study. It will really show possible employers that you understand strategy.

Q: Can you describe what corporate communications and marketing was like at General Mills?

A: As a marketing director at General Mills you are like the hub of a wheel. One of the branches is the “GCom” group. This includes all of the creative, PR people, ad people, and those who execute the marketing plan (price, promotion, place, product). In my position, I was the  “brand manager.” We would  interpret and apply what the consumer wanted and needed in the ontext of the General Mills brand.

Q: What made you quit this job and start Red Stamp?

A: I was on maternity leave and trying to do Red Stamp and General Mills at the same time. After that time away from the office, I knew I wanted to focus on Red Stamp. My family and friends thought I was crazy for leaving this great job at General Mills but I was financially able to leave and always knew I wanted to create my own startup.

Q: Red Stamp has been covered quite a bit by the press lately-how did these happen?

A: We have a great publicist/PR person. She is great at keeping relationships and knowing how to tie in Red Stamp with current events.

Q: What about competitors? Any negative effect of Apple’s Card’s app, which was introduced earlier this fall?

A: Actually, Apple’s app solidified our place. Before, there were some who questioned weather or not mobile devices gave you enough rough to properly design postcards, thank you notes, etc. Obviously the answer is yes!

Q: Any last words of wisdom?

A: This business is tough starting out but also one of the most rewarding ones. You will have the highest of highs and lowest of lows but if you stick with it, it will work out. Find a job that fits your passion and do what you love.
