Christmas Around the Quad, Day 2: School of Public Affairs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Here is Day Two of our series, “Christmas Around the Quad!”

Today’s feature is all about the School of Public Affairs. Don’t forget to tweet @HerCampusAU with the hashtag #AUplaylist to share your recommendations!

Don’t Shoot Me Santa by The Killers

Although you won’t hear this “Christmas” song played on 97.1, it is definitely a catchy Christmas tune.  All you future lawyers would be more famous than Robert Kardashian Sr. (not to be confused with the Dancing with the Stars Runner-Up), if you defended Santa in a murder trial. Something else to consider: who gave Santa a gun with bullets rather than marshmallows?

All I Want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey

We could not write about Christmas songs and not include this mega hit.  The reason for it’s placement in SPA: the striking similarities between Mariah’s glorious words of Christmas romance and the catchphrase of America’s symbol of patriotism, Uncle Sam.

Christmas in Hollis by Run DMC

This Run DMC rap is one of the most underrated Christmas songs. It’s a rap song without any curses, desire for gold teeth, and a message that’s good to the core. If any SPA majors are assigned to work near Hollis, Queens, we sure hope that Christmas is as calm as described by these legends. But if anyone tries to tell you that Santa left them a wallet with “A million dollars in it, cold hundreds of G’s” you probably shouldn’t believe it.

Merry Christmas, Maggie Thatcher from Billy Elliot the Musical

This song might never be heard on the radio with the other Christmas songs. From Billy Elliot the musical, it is a satire of the situation in the UK under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. With political undertones and union workers banding together to advocate for their livelihood, any political science buff or law and society major will appreciate the political history and satire penned by Elton John.

Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight) by The Ramones

The lyrics of this song seem really positive, but the video has a huge fight in the middle. Though everyone has a family feud or two, no cops or law enforcement want to deal with a domestic dispute on Christmas. And maybe if Congress took the advice of Joey Ramone, they could actually pass some laws.
