TV Inspired Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Toronto chapter.

I understand how misleading this title may be, but my daily activities include eating, sleeping & watching TV. Being the poor college student who is absolutely stingy, I never buy magazines, especially Vogue. My fashion sense comes straight from my favorite characters on TV shows. Depending on what I am watching and who my favorite character is, I change my style accordingly. Trust me when I was watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, my parents were terrified. With this epiphany (reached while watching re-runs of Big Bang Theory on TV), I decided to share my knowledge with everyone. Also because I am a huge TV fan, I will share just a few of my favorite sitcoms because if I shared all of them (Gossip Girl, 90210, Pretty Little Liars) this article may never end.

Big Bang Theory

Penny is my favorite character on the show, and obviously out of all the girls, the one with the most fashion sense – no offense to Amy (coincidentally name ‘twinsies’) or Bernadette.  I showed her simplistic style while still being classy and formal with a hint of sexy. Though this promo poster shows Penny in a very sophisticated look, she is normally very down to earth and she loves a simple tank top with mini shorts. She has a touch of country in her style but her clothes on the show are what I would wear everyday in the summer.

How I Met Your Mother

This was hard, picking between Lily and Robin. I love them both and when I’m watching the show, I want to be Lily and have the chance to be with the awesome Marsh-mellow. But when it comes down to fashion, I like Robin’s style just a tiny bit better. She is also well dressed and perceived as the ‘hot’ one of the group. Her famous form-fitting dresses are my favorite. Being a journalist, she has a great work style so I matched the dress to a nice blazer. She isn’t super girly which I really appreciate about her character so I assumed black would be her favorite color.

New Girl

I understand, this is a new show and it should not be here with all the classic sitcoms. BUT, I couldn’t help myself. Zooey Deschanel may be my favorite fashion icon. She completely rocks the vintage look without being a total hipster. She is cute and fun being the nerdy girl. She gives me hope that one day the pretty girls won’t always have to be fashion forward or super sexy with their low V-neck dresses and may be adorable while paying an homage to the past.

Modern Family

Once again, tough decision – I was picking between Haley and Gloria. Seriously, they are both amazing dressers. But since I’m not a super model with a smoking hot body, I went with Haley. She is around our age, dresses amazingly and quite a hipster (I have those days where I like to wear my hipster glasses and my owl necklaces). She brings color to her outfits and has a spring-feel to her style. I love that it is an everyday look that is not only affordable (the shirt is from H&M) and is a very wearable look for school or at least an outfit I won’t be judged brutally on by my classmates. She has a fun and flirty style to her character and when she needs to be sexy, she can bring it as well.

Last but definitely not the least…

Cougar Town

The fact that this show is currently ‘filming’, makes it kind of weird for it to be in this article but I had to include this show because (1) I absolutely love Courtney Cox (2) its an amazing, incredibly funny show (3) she gives me hope that when I’m 40 (which is the new 20), I can still be fabulous and not a soccer mom who only wears sweat pants and hoodies. She dresses up in an arguably appropriate style for a 40-year-old mother. She is sexy but not over the top and she loves sundresses – I cannot argue with her, I love them too. Living in Florida, her outfits are always breezy and I added the sun hat just for Ellie. She is living proof that you can still look good when you get old.

Natalie has recently completed her second year at the University of Toronto with a double major in History and Ethics, Society, and Law. She is excited to bring Her Campus to U of T and seeing it expand its presence in Canada. She is also active in the school's Model United Nations circles and numerous organizations off campus and is best described as a political and pop culture junkie. Born and raised in Toronto, she is blindingly proud of everything the city has to offer including the best school in the country, no matter what Macleans says, and its sports teams, no matter how many times they may lose or miss the playoffs.
