A Single Sweetheart’s Guide to V-Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Seton Hall chapter.

Some girls think that being single on Valentine’s Day is a curse.  While not having a significant other on February 14th may seem like the worst thing ever, Valentine’s Day is what you make of it.  Although it is usually that day of getting roses and chocolates from that special guy, you don’t need that guy to have a great day or to feel good about yourself.
Don’t think that just because you’re single you can’t participate in the traditions of Valentine’s Day.  Rather than sitting on the couch feeling sorry for yourself while you overindulge in ice cream and watch “The Notebook” yet again, splurge on that fancy red dress and go out with a group of your best friends.  Have your own dinner or movie date.  Send yourself flowers or a box of chocolates.  If you don’t feel like getting all dressed up and going out, invite some of your friends over for a fun night in.  Hang out in your sweats and pop in a funny DVD, like “The Hangover.”

Instead of focusing on “romantic” love, remember that there armany other kinds of love in your life even when you’re single.  On Valentine’s Day, tell your friends and family you love them.  Send e-cards, homemade cards or little gift boxes so they know you’re thinking of them.  You can even do something to give back, like volunteering at an animal shelter or making Valentine’s Day cards for children in the hospital.  Not only will you be making a difference by brightening up somebody else’s day, you’ll also feel good about yourself.
There are benefits to being single on Valentine’s Day too.  First of all, you have less pressure put on you so breathe that sigh of relief.  You don’t have worry about how you look or what you say.  The high expectations of that perfect, romantic evening are not necessary to have a fun night.  Also, you can save all that money you would’ve spent on clothes, gifts and dinner.  Use that money for something you’ll enjoy more.  Splurge on those really cute boots you’ve been dying to get at the mall, or plan a weekend getaway somewhere with your girls.

For girls who don’t mind being single on Valentine’s Day, they realize that it’s just a commercial holiday.  You may feel like all of your friends are in relationships and you’re the only single one, but that is probably not the case.  Don’t let the greeting cards and roses get you down because, ultimately, Valentine’s Day does give us that excuse to buy excess amounts of chocolate – a girl’s best friend.
